The library is situated on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the institute. Presently it contains about 45,000 volumes and 120 journals. You find the monographs in a systematical order with the systematic groups "A" - "V", journals have the classification "Z".

Opening hours:

    Monday-Thursday	09.00 hrs. - 20.45 hrs.
    Friday	        09.00 hrs. - 18.30 hrs.

In vacation time these times will be changed, notification will be given of any changes on opening hours.

Please notice that it is not allowed to take baggage or bags into the library. The supervisory staff is required to inspect bags that are taken upstairs.

Two photocopying machines are available. One copy costs 10 pfennigs, you need coins for the machine or have to use copy-cards (available at the supervision).

How to find a specific title? The alphabetic catalogue shows the name of the authors and - in case of books with an editor - the title of the book. Each card shows the signature of the book on the right-hand side of the title card.

How to find books related to a specific theme?

1. On top of the catalogue you can find two copies of the systematics of the library . The systematic groups are labelled with arabic letters, roman numbers and another arabic letters. For an example: "K III gb" is the systematic group for monographs with the subject "economic policy of the EU".
2. The subject catalogue has three parts:
   1. An index , where you can find the notations related to the subjects. With these notations you can make further investigations in the second and third part.
   2. the subject catalogue , which contains theoretical topics and international organizations.
   3. the geographical subject catalogue , where you can find notations related to specific countries and regions.

You can also make an edp-search with the computer, which is situated at the back of the left-hand side of the library. It is necessary to know a specific author, title or key-word. For example, you can ask:

"Find au hesse, joachim jens*" (= all books of the author)
"Find ti europäische gemeinschaften*"(= all titles beginning in this manner)
"Find kw föderalismus*" (= all books containing the key word "föderalismus")

Please notice that its always better to use the truncation sign "*" at the end of your inquiry. - There are about 90 % of the books in the computer-database, especially the new books since 1989.

Its also possible to make an edp-search via the OPAC of the University Library . In the University Library you find several screens with the notation "Tübinger Zeitschriftenverzeichnis (TZV)" and "Institutskataloge". Our catalogue is recherchable with the option "Andere Kataloge" and then the option "Institute 2".

Out of Tubingen its possible to make a research with WWW-connection or Telnet-connection(telnet//opac.ub.uni-tuebingen.de) to the OPAC of the University Library ! Pleas choose after the login the point "Institute 2". In case of telnet-connection you can use with "?" a help-screen in german language.

How to find journals ? A specific journal catalogue shows you the titles. Journals have the signature "Z". The recent issues are to be found in the "Zeitschriftenzimmer" behind the rooms with the copy machines.

The main purpose of the library is to be a reference library If you are entitled to borrow literature , please observe the following rules:

• if you are a student of the institute, you are entitled to borrow books. If not, please contact your supervisor or the librarian to ask whether you are entitled to borrow literature.
• the number of books that can be borrowed is restricted to 3, and the loan-period is one week. The earlier the books are back in the library, the better. The library reserves the right to demand the return of any book at any time.
• the following literature cannot be taken out: reference books (signature "A") and journals (signature "Z").
• please take the books, you want to borrow, to the supervisory staff, fill in a book substitute card. Please write in a clear manner! Place the shelf instead of the book.
• Please bring back the books as soon as possible. When you bring them back, show the books to the supervisory staff, take them in the shelves and bring back the book substitute card to the library supervision.
• Return all books before you leave Tuebingen.
